Is laboratory equipment calibration necessary?

Calibration as the name suggests, is a common practice in laboratories, especially testing laboratories, that ensures the accuracy of equipment used. Laboratory equipment gets adjusted and standardized to yield accurate results. During calibration, readings of equipment get compared to those of a reference standard.

Over time, laboratory equipment gets prone to wear and tear due to continuous usage and damage, which alters accuracy. Additionally, manufacturers attach recommendations for when the equipment needs updating and checks by calibration experts. Once equipment gets calibrated a report is sent back together with the equipment, containing the errors found, and measures to be taken to reduce errors.

IMPORTANCE OF LABORATORY EQUIPMENT CALIBRATION:

  • Improves and maintains the accuracy of the equipment and in turn accurate results
  • Maintains the safety of laboratory analysts in the event of equipment damage
  • Maintains traceability for quality assurance
  • Ensures long-term reliable results
